 MICA [ALUMINO-SILICATE]

Mica is one of a group of lamellar, silicate minerals. Mica is a generic term applied to a group of complex Alumino-silicate minerals having a sheet or plate like structure. Standard Mica is distinguished from other silicate minerals mainly by its high aspect ratio and elasticity. Standard Mica is dry milled mica with high brightness and high purity. Standard Mica possesses high reflective and refractive index imparting natural pearl-like luster and supernatural gloss with plentiful interesting colors and appealing appearance. This products has an extraordinary platy structure with a very high aspect ratio, achieve by thorough care. Assurance is taken to avoid weakening of it is natural brilliance, color and properties during production. Mica is extensively used in industries like in Plastics, Paints, Cosmetics and Rubber.

Specific Properties of Standard Mica Powder:

  •     Natural fine particles
  •     Marked lamellar structure
  •     High aspect ratio
  •     High purity
  •     Extremely low heavy metal content
  •     Asbestos free

 PAINTS

Mica Powder  - dry - is extensively used as a pigment extender in various paints and coatings. When formulated into paint and mortar, mica can give a very smooth finish and easy dispersion. It is an anti-friction, anti-fouling, anti-settling, anti-corrosive, and anti-siege agent. Coarser grades are used to give a decorative effect, Mica is often referred to as Glimmer, a description of the visual effect that it imparts. The particle shape and chemical composition of Mica allows them to be used to increase resistance to chemicals, wear and tear and ultraviolet light in coatings and varnishes. Wet ground Mica acts as a reinforcing pigment to reduce cracking, peeling and checking in the dry film and prevents shrinkage and sheering of the paint.

Mica particles brighten the tone of the coloured pigments, at the same time, transmit and reflect light resulting in proven decorative effects and design. It increases the gloss of a paint very effectively. Mica fillers disperse well in both oil and water based paints, in fact with the addition of mica it is possible to re-disperse the settled pigment easily at any stage of production by simple stirring.

PLASTICS

Mica is known as a unique Inorganic Plastic filler because of its incomparable properties not found in any other fillers. Mica powder is used by the plastics industry for the production of complex injection molded parts taking advantage of its strengthening and elastic properties. It is transparent, flexible and elastic. It can be grinded to very fine particles with a high-aspect ratio, which are specially suited for reinforcing fillers.

In formed thermoplastics, mica promotes uniform cell structure, presuming acting as a nucleating agent, lower its density, reduce cost, add low temperature impact resistance and reduce flammability. The incorporation of mica reduces thermal expansion and helps to eliminate the non-uniform thermal shrinkage and causes warping, it also reduces mould shrinkage and facilitates mould release. Mica enhances the dielectric, heat-resisting and insulating properties of plastics. Mica fillers improve deflection temperature. Mica improves the physical properties of polypropylene, polyethylene, PBT, PET, PPO and nylon composites.

RUBBER

The rubber industry uses wet ground mica as inert filler and a mold release compound in the manufacture of molded rubber products such as tires. The platy texture acts as an anti-blocking, anti-sticking agent.

COSMETICS

Mica is a transparent, shiny mineral which is mined from the earth and its split into very thin sheets thin sheets. It can be opalescent and sparkling or completely matte, ranging in color from grey to blue to green. It is often treated with iron oxides to yield brilliant color effects. Due to the sheer, translucent and skin-hugging effect of the mica mineral, the natural skin tone shines through when added in blush, facial powders or eye shadows. The cosmetics containing mica powder reflects light from the face, creating an illusion of a smoother, softer and more radiant skin tone. Fine lines are softened; skin texture appears more even and more lucid. It is specially used in eye cosmetics to provide sparkle. It is used in all kind of cosmetic products ranging form makeup, nail products and skin care products to completely cover the cosmetic range.
