GROUND CALCIUM CARBONATE

Calcium carbonate is composed of the crystalline mineral, calcite, which occurs naturally in the form of chalk, limestone or marble. Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound, with chemical formula CaCO3. Ground Calcium Carbonate is produced from a pure quarried source like marble[> 98% CaCO3]. Limestone is a common sedimentary rock composed primarily of the calcium carbonate mineral, calcite (CaCO3). Limestone constitutes approximately 10 percent of the sedimentary rocks exposed on the earth’s surface. Either limestone or marble may be used as the basis for crushed or ground calcium carbonate. Ground calcium carbonate, commonly referred to as GCC, is very widely used as an industrial mineral. Three primary attributes: particle size, color and chemical purity define the quality of the GCC, and define the suitability of use for any given application. Few industrial minerals can match GCC for its combination of properties and cost.

PLASTICS, PVC & CABLES

Plastics benefit from calcium carbonate addition resulting in increased rigidity and positive effect on mechanical properties; tensile strength and impact strength. The second-largest market for FGCC in the United States is the plastics industry. The largest plastics market for FGCC is in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. In automotive plastics, FGCC is used as an extender in order to achieve cost reductions.

The Film industry uses fine calcium carbonate to reduce the formulation cost and also to increase processing speeds.

The PVC industry uses calcium carbonate as a filler to benefit from reduced costs of production.

ADHESIVES AND SEALANTS

This industry use ground calcium carbonates (GCC) to adjust rheological properties; color is also important as many sealants require a white mineral filler to maintain a white or light color. Fine-ground calcium carbonates are widely used as fillers in adhesive and sealant compounds. Adhesive and sealant applications encompass a wide spectrum of products ranging from household caulks to joint cement compounds and carpet backings.

 

 

 

FOOD/ CONFECTIONERY & PHARMA

Standard Snow Carb is heavily used in the food & confectionery industry. It is used as filler in the gum-base manufacturing; upto 60% of the gum-base consists of Calcium Carbonate. The high purity of the calcium carbonate with high brightness makes it suitable for the pharma industry as calcium carbonate is an active ingredient in most medicines specially in calcium nutritional supplements. Ground Calcium Carbonate is also used in the manufacturing of toothpastes. When formulating toothpaste with calcium carbonate as the abrasive, the strongest cleaning action will result when using a GCC as compared to PCC (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate).

 

PAPER

Calcium Carbonate is the most important filler and coating pigment for the paper making process in the todays world. It lends paper a high degree of whiteness, opacity, gloss and a good printability at attractive prices.

The use of calcium carbonate also pays off in production. The paper machines can operate at higher speeds and the finished paper dries more quickly. These improvements save costly energy. As a rule, mineral fillers are low-cost products compared to fiber, which means that filler-loaded paper products are often cheaper to manufacture.

 

RUBBER

GCC in rubber is used an extender in order to improve the rheology and the processability of the compounds and to reduce the cost of the formulation. One of the prominent deficiencies of calcium carbonates is the lack of reinforcement. It is normal, therefore, for calcium carbonates to be used in combination with other reinforcing or semi-reinforcing fillers in order to obtain the most cost-effective overall performance. Almost every sector of the rubber industry utilizes the cost effectiveness of this mineral.

The basic behavior, and hence reason for selection of Calcium Carbonate, in elastomers is primarily influenced by its source (color), particle size and manufacturing route. When these are taken into consideration by the formulator, the mineral is able to provide a large number of significant technical benefits to the industry in addition to its conventional role of cost reduction. These benefits include low moisture, high thermal conductivity, low hardness and modulus, low permanent set and easy processing. These make calcium carbonate an essential ingredient to the financial viability of the rubber industry.
